“It is human weakness to be tricked into revealing your password or your information.”

Thomas Rid

Thomas Rid is Professor of Security Studies at King’s College London, and he works on cybersecurity and intelligence.

“My work is about looking at the history of ideas and the history of technology,” Rid says. The personal computer, the internet and encryption – these are the technologies that criminals look to exploit.

The problem is not malware or malicious software getting through to you, it is you being tricked by an email asking you for details, Rid stresses. However, he highlights an encouraging trend: technology that is designed to be secure is becoming easier to use, for example, as apps, and more people are using encrypted software.
