Winton Garden Wins Silver at Chelsea

The Winton Beauty of Mathematics garden has won a silver-gilt medal at the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden was designed by Nick Bailey, Head Gardener at Chelsea Physic Garden and a first-time exhibitor at the show, and was inspired by the beauty found in the mathematics and algorithms, which underpin all of nature and plant life.

On being awarded the medal, Nick Bailey commented “I feel extremely honoured to have received a silver-gilt medal at this prestigious event. I am absolutely elated. It has been an extraordinary 14-month journey and what is so special for me is the incredible support I have had from Winton since David and Claudia Harding entrusted me to deliver this garden. David and Claudia wanted me to create a garden that embodied some of the values of Winton. Winton has a huge bank of data scientists and so I started to look at data in horticultural terms. While I was obviously aware that maths plays a significant part in plant growth and patterns, in fact it drives everything. Every growth process is in effect an algorithm and I tried to embody that in the garden.”
